Most countries start with a single issue, say, pornography. But censorship is an addictive drug and governments NEVER know when to stop! While I can’t give a number grade to Thailand, I feel that ANY censorship damages our society, our ability to be fully-informed and therefore make fully-informed decisions, to have access and expression for ALL opinions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

FACT has just this week submitted its formal complaint to the Official Information Commission which must render its decision within 60 days. The Commission’s decision has binding force of law. MICT MUST answer them. If MICT continues to cite martial law, national security and law enforcement as its excuses for censorship, they must specify how these grounds apply to the Commission. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pure and simple, censorship is illegal in Thailand; even if one considers the 1997 Constitution to be irrelevant, it still forms the foundation of Thai law. Of course, MICT is just a small part of the picture which we have chosen to target because we have access to its blocklists. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For the past 20 years, I haven’t been very active in any social movements here. But sometimes one is the first person to recognise a fault in society or government. How can one be a responsible member of society and not act on one’s conscience? If I had not be able to influence at least a few Thai people, I probably would have left Thai democracy to its fate. But now, as you can see, FACT has signers from every avenue of Thai life, even a couple of NLA members and an Army general.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You may be aware that FACT has submitted proposals and recommendations to both the Constitutional Drafting Committee and the NLA committee considering the Computer-Related Crimes Bill which involve personal privacy issues such as the retention of Internet log data and search fields for each user. As long as people keep installing and accepting CCTV everywhere and GPS in every mobile phone, we will live in a surveillance world. I don’t think this is an issue government will ever give up on. Here in Thailand, the New Year’s bombings gives a great excuse for more control. Government ALWAYS uses such incidents to increase repression and surveillance; history proves the government sometimes bombs itself in order to create an enemy. Mostly, I think government considers its citizens at worst the enemy, at least they don’t have any trust in our actions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are five to seven BILLION cached webpages, between one and two billion active pages, more than 100 million blogs. Excellent point! The Royal Thai Police is a far bigger censorship culprit than MICT. They went to the Council of State for clarification regarding the legality of their censorship. To put it simply, the Council of State ruled that Internet censorship in Thailand is ILLEGAL. However, that didn’t stop them continuing blocking, as they have since 1999.
